The Spanish Siesta

I bless this southern custom for having offered me the solution to the problem of posing. Thanks to my siestas — any version works for me: long, short, in pyjamas, a dressing gown, or fully dressed — the subject of my photograph relaxes into a position of their own choosing, in a familiar, everyday, comfortable place, and forgets about me.
They remain surrounded by objects they love, or have forgotten they once loved — objects that seem to come alive almost like the toys in Toy Story. That is how I perceive them when I develop the images digitally, as I look at them again and again and feel they gain a voice and speak of the subject, of the time they have spent there, demanding a role far greater than a secondary one.
