The Counts of Sert

Frankie Sert and María del Mar Arnús, Counts of Sert, together with their daughter Genara and their grandchildren Antonio and Claudio, pose in front of the portrait of Frankie’s father — one of only two equestrian paintings ever made by Ramón Casas — and beside a rationalist bench designed in 1948 by Josep Lluís Sert, the architect and also Frankie’s uncle, for his home on Long Island.
Genara, the eldest daughter, is a doctor of philosophy and a cultural manager. Her father describes himself as Spanish, monarchist and socialist, and of all the books he has written, the one he is most proud of is El Goloso (Alianza Editorial), a European history of fine dining.
The family home, where they all gather every Saturday, is a stately building by Sagnier that was renovated by Federico Correa in the 1970s. In earlier times it was inhabited by dogs and other abandoned animals that Francisco de Sert y López, the current count’s elder uncle, took in for the Animal Protection Society he presided over.
