Italian Circus

Analogic photography, 1991
This is one of the photographic projects I always return to. Almost three decades later, I still discover new images in the old contact sheets, which I keep meaning to enlarge. A school assignment that I do not consider academic, thanks to my photography teacher at Elisava, Ramon Puiggené.
With this project I discovered that, through the camera, I could immerse myself almost to the point of disappearing into a world that was not my own. It took a titanic effort to overcome the shyness that has always held me back in life, and which at the age of 23 was overwhelming.
I ended up becoming deeply attached to this tribe of Italian circus performers, whom I followed through different towns across Catalonia. I became so involved that it was very difficult for me to bring the reportage to an end, and I was unable to see then — as I can see now — that this is what I have always wanted to do: to step into other people’s skin and tell their stories.
